Seniors Serving Seniors - Return to Health

Seniors Serving Seniors (SSS) is a Victoria non-profit organization that connects volunteers with seniors in the community that need support. We are celebrating our 40th anniversary this year and Lane Sherman, the Volunteer Education Coordinator, will be presenting on the topic of his organization, the three primary programs run by SSS, their role in the community, and a little bit about the organization's history.

Healthcare professionals from Island Health (South) refer frail seniors transitioning to/from hospital to the program.  On receiving a referral, the Community Services Coordinator will meet with the client and match them with a specially trained Return to Health Volunteer.

Volunteers provide social support, encouragement, and connections to community resources. These volunteers receive specialized training in seniors’ issues, stressing good communication skills and familiarity with the ageing process. The initial 15 hours of training are normally given each Spring (currently, training is being provided online and is more compressed). In addition, volunteers receive ongoing support at monthly meetings. The purpose of these meetings is for further education and connection to other volunteers.

Lane Sherman is a trainer, speaker, and consultant working primarily with change, leadership development, and systems/processes/tools for building healthy organizations. Lane has an MA in Leadership and Training from Royal Roads University, is a certified mediator (JIBC), and is the author of “The Keys to Collaboration; How to build a great team or fix the one you’ve got”. Lane primarily works in the private sector however throughout his 20+ year career he has offered his time to support non-profit organizations delivering important services in our communities. He is currently working with Seniors Serving Seniors, a Victoria-based non-profit organization, as their Volunteer Education Coordinator.

Lane is an avid rock-hound, collector of gemstones, and makes jewelry with some of his finds as a hobby. Lane also ran a licensed family daycare (Daddy’s Daycare) in Fairfield from 1992-1998 while his children were at home. He claims that is where he learned everything he needed to know to be a successful mediator and trainer.
