The Indian Act, the Indian Reserve System and the Indian Residential School System

'Qwastånayå’ (or L. Maynard Harry) is a member of the Tla'amin Nation and served as his Nations Chief Councillor for two years and on its council for four terms. Maynard’s in-depth knowledge of the history and culture of Aboriginal peoples, traditional land and resource use practices, comes from years of working closely with traditional land and resource use experts, Elders and other leaders while Managing Tla’amin’s Aboriginal Rights and Title Department for 12 years.

Maynard will focus on contemporary negative impacts brought on by the Indian Act, the Indian Reserve System and the Indian Residential School System. He would like to cover Aboriginal rights and title as well.

While Chief Councillor, Maynard was a primary architect of the historic 2003 ‘Community Accord’ signed by the Tla’amin Nation and the City of Powell River May 10, 2003. This Accord was reaffirmed by these communities in 2018. Maynard’s intergovernmental work was recognized at the regional level by the City of Powell River with a ‘Freedom of the Municipality’ in 2008 and a national level with a ‘Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal’ in 2013) from the Governor-General of Canada.

Maynard is a partner with the Advanced Business Match and Founder, Indigenous Insight.
