John Heraghty  introduced  our speaker, Dr Thomas Pedersen.

Dr. Thomas Pedersen holds a PhD in marine geochemistry from the University of Edinburgh, and is currently a Professor in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria.

He previously served at UVic as Executive Director of the Pacific Institute for ClimateSolutions from 2009 to 2015, Dean of Science (2003 to 2009) and Director of the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences (2002-2003).

In 2015 he served as a member of the Climate Leadership Team of the Province of British  Columbia, and he chairs the Canadian Climate Forum, based in Ottawa.

Pedersen is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Canada and the American Geophysical Union. He is an intemationally recognized authority on ocean chemistry, has published extensively in the field of paleoceanography, and has longstanding interests in climate change issues and the application of government policy to climate-change mitigation and adaptation.

On a personal note, l first met Tom at dinner after Uplands Men’s Night golf last summer. He explained what he did and displayed his ample knowledge of his subject, but also offered very un-Andrew Weaver like solutions. I’d call him a pragmatist. He’s also entertaining. I think you’ll be better informed after hearing
what he has to say.
Dr Pedersen gave members a very enthusiastic talk on climate change, which I found fact based , informative  and balanced.

His talk sparked a number of thoughtful questions from members.

Bill Feyrer thanked our speaker.
